Countryside 2010 is a two-week showcase of rural activities, events and attractions in South East England that gives a new view of the countryside and how to enjoy it.

Countryside 2010 comes from the Rural Ways Partnership which is coordinated by the Regional Tourist Board, Tourism South East. It is funded by the Rural Development Programme for England. (see all the FAQ)

The idea is that from 29th May to 13th June the website will promote events that organisers choose to submit to the website, with a view to let people know what’s available and what sort of activities are going on in the country.

If you check out the directory you’ll find over 700 choices submitted by over 400 organisers. You can view events by area and you can also search - I love the fact that there are tick boxes like “family friendly” and “dogs on leads”. This sort of facility first of all offers people the opportunity to find exactly what they are looking for and, second, it gives Countryside 2010 insight into what sort of things are important to people.

There are several reasons why I think the whole idea is excellent.

1) It presents activities in a simple and concise manner.

2) Organisers themselves are effectively populating this. The website is there to provide a focal point and an overall organisation aspect but each organiser ultimately has the responsibility of the event.

3) It gives people real alternatives for days out and activities.

4) It promotes the countryside as a destination and a place that offers real value.

Regular readers will remember that when it comes to travel and hospitality we believe in taking responsibility and offering value added service before communicating them. This is another reason we love Countryside 2010. It creates a pre-condition that encourages organisers to act and offer services that will truly inspire people. What more could you ask?
